Dance and age inclusive practice

Led by Cecilia Macfarlane and featuring excellent guest speakers and workshop leaders, this three and a half day course is perfect for those working across age groups and who need to consider how to most safely and effectively work with people at different stages in life. It combines creative guidance with the practical considerations associated with age inclusive dance leadership. Read Cecilia's biography here...

FCD certified with 25 CPD credits aligned with industry approved National Occupational Standards in Dance Leadership, these courses support your leadership to generate work and develop your dance leading in participatory settings.

We will be running five different courses this year. Click on the titles below for more information:

Introductory course:

Passport to practice: An induction to professional practice in community dance with Diane Amans

Pathway courses:

Dance, health and wellbeing with Miranda Tufnell

Dance and disabled people with Isabel Jones

NEW! Dance, media and site-specific practice with Rosemary Lee

All courses involve practical and theory based learning.

The lead tutor on each course will share film, stories and examples of practice to discuss. Practical sessions will also be led by the lead tutor to encourage you to develop your own approach to leading your dance genre in person-centred ways appropriate to the settings and people you want to work with.

All course groups come together for two practical sessions with an invited choreographer who spends time with you to nurture your creative development and equip you with person-centred choreographic approaches to keep you inspired artistically and your groups. Then, back in your course group your lead tutor opens discussion with you to unpick and highlight the choreographic approaches that are best applied for the settings you work in.

All course groups also meet to look at the qualities of a leader, what kind of leading community dance practitioners do, and what kind of leader you would like to be. A few months after the summer school course you have a one-to-one coaching session to check in with you to support the learning you have taken away from the summer school, to apply to your practice or your group(s).

Self directed learning is a key element to this course and we aim to provide you with the space to reflect and apply your learning to your personal situations.

What does the price include?
The Summer School price includes: your course fee, course handbook, accommodation, lunches and refreshments and a post-course coaching session.

Can I attend this course?
You must be 18 or over and have at least two years of experience in leading dance with groups and want to improve your skills in leading dance with specific settings or people.
