About the role

Founded over 30 years ago by the current Artistic and Executive Director Avril Hitman, Magpie is recruiting new board members with public, private or not-for-profit experience, excellent advocacy skills and a passion for the mission and values of Magpie Dance.

Trustees have responsibility for the strategic direction, governance and development of this award winning charity based in SE London.

Magpie Dance welcomes candidates from all backgrounds and applications are particularly sought from those with knowledge of the public health sector; lifelong learning; marketing and PR; quality standards; disability arts; dance; integrated dance practice; youth arts; fundraising and finance.

We are also seeking someone with professional finance experience to act as treasurer to guide and advise the Board of Trustees on the approval of the budgets, accounts and financial strategy within the context of current legislation.

Role description

Trustees will be required to:
  • To ensure the effective, efficient administration and financial stability of Magpie Dance
  • To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law (if applicable), company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • Provide governance and aspiration for Magpie Dance, ensuring delivery in line with its business plan and strategic objectives
  • Act as an ambassador and advocate for Magpie Dance
  • Have good communication, diplomacy and inter personal skills
  • Ensure that the Board has put in place satisfactory systems of control in respect of legal, operational and financial risk management 
  • Be available at times outside of board meetings for sub committees as required.
In addition the Treasurer will be required to:
  • Have relevant financial qualifications and experience 
  • Guide and advise the Board of Trustees on the approval of the budgets, accounts and financial strategy within the context of current legislation
  • Work in close cooperation with, and provide support to, the Finance Manager (ACCA qualified) and members of the Senior Management team, having particular regard to the correct and accurate recording of day to day financial transactions and their relationship to the existence of sufficient safe guards for the prevention and detection of fraud
  • The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences; preparedness to make unpopular recommendations to the board.
Time commitment

Trustee Board Meetings are held four to six times a year in the evenings, in Bromley. Other time commitments will include attending additional committee meetings (approximately 1 day/month) and key Magpie events, championing the charity in external networks and developing influential partnerships.
