Dance with early years

Course length: two days
This two-day course is open to anyone with an interest in developing practice and/or performance work with young children and those in Early Years settings.

Course content includes:
  • Developing participatory shows and projects for early years using Turned On Its Head blend of participation and performance.
  • Exploration of improvised performance and contact improvisation, with the opportunity to make immersive dance pieces during the two days.
  • Developing a tool kit of ideas so work with parents/carers as participants and partners in creating dance work.
  • Working with hard to reach children and families including looked after children and children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
  • Tools for using intensive interaction within participatory and performance settings
  • Neuroscience and attachment training specific to early years
  • Working hands on with groups of families and young children to explore themes, props and music for early years.
Participants will also get an insight into Turned On Its Head new work Mrs Pockets, which will push the boundaries of improvised performance and play for nursery, hospital, children centre settings as well as family groups.

Liz Clark biography
Liz Clark is Artistic Director Turned On Its Head as well as an independent dancer, choreographer and creative practitioner based Loughborough, in the East Midlands. Collaborating with Associate Artist Oksana Tyminska, Turned On Its Head exists to create participatory performances where children are welcomed into the performance space and their authentic responses integrated into the show making surprising and delightful theatre. The company have just finished a national tour of their show “Sponge”.

Turned On Its Head is an Affiliate Company at Curve, Leicester where Liz runs Little Movers, a child-led creative dance session with children under 4 and their parents. Her practice integrates sensory story telling and dance improvisation exploring the interaction between the child and their parent/carer. She is currently working on Building Brilliant Brains; a dance programme for children informed by attachment and neuroscience research.

Liz Clark's improvisatory dance work with families is also featured in the 'Inspire Me' films of Akram Khan's Big Dance Pledge 2016.
