Development of the Dance Training and Accreditation Project (DTAP)

June 2009

Development of National Occupational Standards begins

Foundation for Community Dance are taking the lead in bringing together consultation groups to find common ground amongst all forms of dance delivery in order to identify key competencies and professional standards to be recognised as part of national occupational standards directory and adopted widely by the dance sector.

The consultation will happen in three ways:
  • Develop a focussed working group, encouraging diversity and experienced programmers, practitioners and course designers to contribute to the group. The group will be a sounding board that will engage by e-mail and meet up three times over the coming year
  • Use FCD’s National College for Community Dances’ activities (courses/seminars/network events) as an action research strand to consult with experienced practitioners about standards at different levels
  • Present the recommendations arising from the above consultations with the wider industry as a one day event in March 2010 for debate and take on board feedback - making alterations and refinement of the standards proposal by end of May 2010
The consultations are focussed around:
  • Identifying general competencies in dance work with people
  • Identifying specialist competencies in dance work with Older Adults, Disability, Criminal Justice, Health and Well being, Young People
  • Identifying where competencies sit on the national accepted levels for CPD with equivalence to other professions
  • Communicating with the dance sector to achieve awareness and buy in to support the development of the profession drawing upon FCD’s legacy of Making a Move and continuation of these consultations
  • Recommendations as to how the standards will look and work for and the proposal we give to a variety of contexts such as for Creative and Cultural Skills, looking at flexible routes to employment and for Further Education and Higher Education Institutions.

2005

Research and development

In 2005, the Foundation for Community Dance, on behalf of its members, took the lead on the process of research and development to provide the community dance profession with a strategy to address its current and future development needs by articulating professional standards, supporting professional development and validating professional status in community dance.

This began with extensive consultation with individuals and organisations across the dance and arts sectors. These took the form of face to face meetings (see Members' Consultation: Briefing Paper Feb 2005 and Members' Consultation: Report June 2005 downloadable below) and an online survey (see four Research Findings papers downloadable below).
