Making a Move
Introduction to Making a Move: a strategy for the development of a Professional Framework for community dance by Ken Bartlett, Creative Director, Foundation for Community Dance
Making a Move was launched on 13 September 2006 at De Montfort University, Leicester and is an important development for community and participatory dance. It is seen by Creative and Cultural Skills, the sector skills council for the creative and cultural industries in the UK, as a pioneering initiative in developing standards across the cultural sector, in line with the government's aims to:
  • Reduce skills gaps and shortages
  • Improve productivity, business and public service performance
  • Increase opportunities to boost the skills and productivity of everyone in the sector's workforce
  • Improve learning supply including apprenticeships, higher education and National Occupational Standards (NOS).
However this is not the only reason we have embarked on this initiative. It has genuinely come about in response to enquiries and observations from Members about increasing requests from employers for them to articulate their professional competence and standards.

We were keen to ensure that this initiative was led by practice and practitioners rather than imposed from outside - or as Kathryn Dean puts it, 'forced on us by external agents'. A central principle of the Strategy is to ensure that we recognise, value and continue to support the different and diverse entry points, practice, practitioners and styles of dance that community dance can and does embrace: that the Framework as it evolves will be as sturdy as a climbing frame yet flexible enough to change shape as our profession develops and grows.

All the contributors to this focus were asked the question, 'how would the Framework, as currently set out, be of benefit or prove useful in your work/role?'.

We would like to thank all those people who have contributed and helped us develop the strategy, from initial consultations in March 2005 to the launch in September 2006. The process to now make it a supportive and effective reality will be achieved by continued collaboration with the profession.
