Applications for TECHNE 2025/26 PhD studentships in the Arts and Humanities are now open!

The University of Roehampton is proud to be a member of techne, a consortium of nine institutions in London and the South-East that form an AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), offering fully-funded PhD studentships to both home and international applicants.

Roehampton supports PhD applications in most techne subject areas and our commitment to the arts and humanities is evident throughout the university’s schools and research and knowledge exchange centres. We supervise doctoral projects across techne disciplines in a range of specialist areas, including: dance practice, culture, philosophy, and history; heritage studies; theology and social action; diverse Victorian culture; Romantic illustration; philosophy and animal welfare; environmental studies; children’s literature and childhood studies; visual texts and print culture; creative writing, memoir, and life writing; music education; espionage and cold war culture, literature, and history; social justice; film studies; digital industries, and journalism. Leading scholars in computer science and AI are also able to work with you across these arts and humanities disciplines. Roehampton has a track record of securing techne funding for cross-disciplinary projects, such as a cultural geography project that combines children’s literature and social science methodologies.

Studentships – What We Offer

techne offers a rich and diverse training programme for doctoral students with a focus on interdisciplinarity and developing career potential both in and beyond higher education. Studentships are awarded by techne to the best students put forward by its member universities. The techne training programme is enhanced by input and placement opportunities provided by techne’s fifteen partner organisations in the cultural sector.

Support

Successful TECHNE applicants will receive a home fee-waiver plus stipend at current UKRI levels (to be confirmed for 2025/26). The typical length of funding is for 3.5 years or part-time equivalent, adjusted pro-rata in the case of applicants who have already begun their studies. (Current PhD students are eligible to apply if they have at least 50% of the typical funded period remaining by October 2025). Roehampton is pleased to offer a fee-waiver to successful international applicants to cover the difference between ‘home’ and international fees..
