Expertise runs deep at Summer School
Date posted: 30 June 2018
Continuity and quality in the highest standards of community dance practice are demonstrated by the impressive line-up of course leaders at People Dancing’s 10th Summer School (23-28 July 2018).
Claire Pring
For example, Claire Pring (pictured right), a Lead Practitioner for Dance in Derbyshire, will run the ‘Teaching Dance in Primary Schools’ course on 26 July; the next day, Jo Rhodes (pictured top) will lead the ‘Developing youth dance practice’ course. Claire taught Jo at her Cheshire Dance youth group, Plastic Macc, from the age of 11.

Claire says of her former pupil: “By the time Jo was 16 it was clear she was an outstanding choreographer; when she was still only 17, I think, Jo choreographed a piece that the group took to Islington Arts Factory and was hosting youth dance summer schools.

“In fact,” admits Claire, “I could see even then that Jo had an innate understanding of choreography that went beyond my own training”, generously adding that, “as a teacher you always hope that those you’ve taught go on to achieve greater things than you.”

Another name from Claire’s time working with youth dance groups in Cheshire was Diane Amans, who will also return to the People Dancing Summer School this year, leading the ‘Introduction to dance with older people’ course and running two one-day workshops on ‘Dance and dementia’.

“I look back on those Cheshire years with great fondness and pride,” says Claire.

“I worked closely with Diane, just up the road in Stockport and these networks were so important because we didn’t feel alone, we could ask each other for help, see what other projects were developing and the links they were making.

“It was a really strong, thriving community dance area to live and work in… happy days!”
