Events
Cultural identity and sense of place, voice and presence
There’ll be a wealth of exciting projects to learn from under this key conference theme, with presentations and workshops drawing on real life experience of community dance from around the world, starting with New Scots - Dance with refugee and migrant communities in Scotland and including Developing cultural identity with children through dance; and You are here – dancing with migrant communities in Stoke-on-Trent.

Then there’s Dance for everybody and What’s going on?, two workshops with renowned US dancer, choreographer and teacher Vincent E Thomas; Moving Difference, Making Place – public square dance as community catalyst for marginalised populations in Xichang, China; a workshop from Project X; Bona, siya fana – look we are all the same, a presentation from Gladys Agulhas; and Within and without the city walls, with choreographer Rosemary Lee.
Older people dancing
Highlights from this key theme will include presentations by Fergus Early, Libby Costello, Carrie Washington, Lorna Murray and Rachel Bar, with discussion chaired by Anne Gallacher, Director of Luminate Festival; a workshop led by dance artist and researcher Monica Gillette; Mindful Arts – creating meaningful connections with people living with dementia, a workshop with Magdalena Schamberger of Hearts & Minds; performances by Moving Memory Dance Theatre Company and Scottish Ballet Elders Company; Small Dances: older people dancing in residential settings, a workshop with Diane Amans; and Dance for people living with dementia, a workshop with Katie Mason of Rambert Dance Company.
Dance for people living with Parkinson's
Just some of the speakers, artists and performers to look out for include: Marc Vlemmix, Dance for Health and Parkinson’s; Monica Gillette; Miriam Early, education officer, Scottish Ballet; Dr Sara Houston, principal dance lecturer, University of Roehampton; Danielle Teale – independent dance artist; Melanie Brierley, community dance artist, Conscious Bodies; Dr Bethany Whiteside – research lecturer, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; Dr Sofia Hulbert – neuro-physiotherapist and dance artist; Dr Alison Williams, an Edinburgh-based academic who started dancing after her Parkinson’s diagnosis, in 2012; and Ray Wegrzyn, founder of Parkinson’s EQUIP. Workshops will feature dancers from Scottish Ballet's dance for Parkinson's classes. There'll also be a lively panel discussion featuring leading artists, academics and dancers in the field.
Made in Scotland
While Glasgow 2017 is very much a global event, there’ll be a strong Scottish flavour running through the conference. From an opening welcome from Christopher Hampson, chief executive and artistic director of Scottish Ballet, the conference will feature Dance House Older People’s Company; Project X; Barrowland Ballet; Scottish Ballet Elders Company; YDance; Magdalena Schamberger - Hearts and Minds; Karen Anderson – Indpen-dance; Rezije Sherifi - Maryhill Integration Network; Natasha Gilmore - Barrowland Ballet; Edinburgh based dance for Parkinson’s champion Dr Alison Williams; dancers from Scottish Ballet’s dance for Parkinson’s classes; plus a presentation on Dance with Refugee and Migrant Communities in Scotland… and, no, it wouldn’t feel right without a Ceilidh at the social event!
Liz Lerman set for closing spotlight
Delegates can expect a rousing send off when US choreographer Liz Lerman gives her conference closing address, The Complexities of Creativity, on Thursday 5 October. The world-renowned choreographer, performer, writer, educator and speaker has travelled far and wide since she worked as a go-go dancer in the mid-70s. Inventor of CRP (Critical Response Process – “a method of getting useful feedback in anything you make, from dance to dessert”), the widely honoured Liz founded Liz Lerman Dance Exchange in 1976 and has worked with Urban Bush Women, Sadler’s Wells, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the National Theatre and the London Sinfonietta. A former artist-in-residence at Harvard University, Liz has had work commissioned by Harvard Law School, the Lincoln Center, American Dance Festival and the Kennedy Center.
