Information about my work:

I am an experienced independent dance artist, teacher and choreographer. My work extends across three main strands; Performance, Community and Youth. After being based in the South-West I have relocated to Oxford about 18 months ago. Having already built some exciting new connections and collaborations, I’m keen to further develop this and engage with a wider network of local and regional dance artists, particularly as I am planning a full R&D for my next professional work Bye, Bye Binary. I will therefore be holding a series of paid Creative Collaboration Sessions to meet performers based in the region.

Collaboration, inclusivity and interdisciplinary practice underpins all my work. Also I am passionate about creating accessible opportunities for performers, communities & collaborators and for my next work I’m particularly keen to work with artists who self-identify as disabled and/or neurodiverse, as well as artists from the global majority and from a wide range of ages, gender identifications, sexual orientations and from working-class backgrounds.

My collaborative process is largely research-based with time built-in for reflection and exploration. For this reason, I would like to work with artists who are interested in or inspired by the themes of Bye, Bye Binary and would be keen to fully engage in the creative process. The sessions will include use of the voice and so artists taking part would need to be comfortable exploring voice as well as movement.

Bye, Bye Binary is inspired by the work of bell hooks on binary culture. bell hooks is an American author, theorist, educator and social critic, best known for her writings on race, feminism, and class. The focus of her writing explores the intersectionality of race, capitalism, and gender, and what she describes as their ability to produce and perpetuate systems of oppression and domination. Her work on binary culture describes how our culture prescribes and promotes establishing two categories and then places one group above the other: enforcing sexism, racism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination based on disability, class, age etc., and explores how binaries help to enforce these cultures of domination.
