No matter your dance style or level of experience, a strong understanding of health and safety principles is essential to responsible dance practice.

Working with participants in community and participatory settings carries a duty of care that extends beyond artistic delivery. Safe practice protects physical wellbeing, supports psychological safety, reduces the risk of injury, and helps create environments in which participants can engage with confidence.

This one-day workshop provides essential training for dance practitioners seeking to strengthen their knowledge and application of safe and healthy dance practice. The course examines current approaches to effective warm-up and cool-down, appropriate exercise sequencing, fatigue management, injury prevention and response, and the creation of psychologically healthy dance environments. Particular attention is given to adapting practice appropriately according to both dance style and participant needs.

Through practical exploration, discussion, and guided reflection, participants will develop a clearer understanding of how to embed health and safety principles into all aspects of their work. The training recognises that safe practice is not an optional addition to dance leadership, but a fundamental professional responsibility.

By attending this workshop, participants will gain greater understanding of:

  • The essential components of safe and effective warm-up and cool-down
  • How to sequence movement progressively and appropriately to reduce unnecessary strain and fatigue
  • Strategies for reducing the risk of injury and responding appropriately should injury occur
  • The importance of promoting psychologically healthy and inclusive dance environments
  • How informed health and safety practice contributes to sustainable participation and professional standards within dance.

This workshop is suitable for dance practitioners at all stages of their careers and is particularly valuable for those delivering work in community, educational, participatory, or inclusive settings. It also supports practitioners undertaking safe practice qualifications, including the People Dancing's Safer Community Dance Practice Online Course.
