Course summary
This eight-unit online course, developed by People Dancing, Dance for PD®, and Mark Morris Dance Group provides dance practitioners and others with core foundational knowledge about the safe, effective, and creative delivery of dance sessions for people living with Parkinson’s.
The course covers the following topics:
- Unit 1: 10 core principles and the artistic imperative
- Unit 2: The medical condition and medication
- Unit 3: Safe practice and undertaking a risk assessment
- Unit 4: Teaching techniques – environment, setting expectation and providing cues
- Unit 5: Class design and structure
- Unit 6: Exercise design
- Unit 7: Translation for inclusion and accessibility
- Unit 8: Review and summary.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at dancers and teaching artists who have little or no prior experience of working with people living with Parkinson’s but wish to include them in their regular classes or set up session specifically for members of the Parkinson’s community.
Evidence your knowledge and understanding
If you want to be able to show to yourself and others that you have gained the knowledge and understanding that you need to work safely and creatively with people living with Parkinson’s take the assessment which leads to the qualification: Approaches to Dance for People with Parkinson’s (Level 4 Certificate).
This qualification forms the basis of a number of training courses offered by such training partners as People Dancing, Dance for PD® / Mark Morris Dance Group, Dance for Parkinson’s Australia, and Dancing With Parkinson’s Canada / Canada’s National Ballet School.
