Description / Summary 

The People Dancing Professional Qualification ‘Introduction to Teaching and Leading Dance in Community Contexts’ is a Level 4 Diploma that enables dance artists and practitioners to evidence their ability to plan, develop and adapt coherent and progressive dance activities for a population and participatory context of their choice.

Focusing on the theories that underpin good practice it provides a stepping stone to the Level 5 Diploma which enables autonomous delivery. The Diploma covers the following topics: population-specific knowledge; safe dance practice; session content and structure; planning, reflection, assessment, evaluation; teaching styles and strategies, dance content adaption and progression.

Entry requirements

There are no prior qualification requirements relating to entry for this qualification, however prior experience in the dance style of your choice and a good understanding of technical vocabulary relating to your dance style is essential. You will also need to be able to synthesise and apply knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to all the learning outcomes set out in the qualification specification.

 

Timing

You are able to commence at a time to suit you: 

  • Learners can join the training and learning support programme at any point in the year
  • Access to your chosen online course material will be granted within seven days of registration. These can be accessed for 24 months from the date of registration
  • Online group discussions will take place four times a year
  • The one-to-one discussion can be arranged at any time of year with four weeks notice
  • Learners are expected to undertake independent study and practice in their own time. Combined with the online support the total study time relating to the diploma is approximately 370 hours before taking the assessment.

 

Pricing

  • Standard price: £865 plus a registration fee of £35
  • Members price: £770 (registration fee waived for members).
  • Flexible, staggered payment terms are available to anyone signing up to the diploma to help spread the cost. 
  • If learners have already purchased any of the applicable online courses, the previous payment will be deducted from the overall fee. 

 

Progression Routes

Learners may wish to progress to the People Dancing Level 5 Diploma Dance Teaching and Leading which requires learners to evidence autonomous delivery in participatory dance practice.

Core study areas

The Diploma covers three main areas of study:

  1. Safer dance practice in community contexts
  2. Population-specific knowledge
  3. Principles and practices of dance teaching and leading.

Preparation

People Dancing offers a flexible training package and learning support programme relating to the diploma consisting of:

  • Safer Community Dance Practice online course
  • Improving Your Teaching Skills for Community Dance Practice online course.
  • A choice of one of the following online courses: Introduction to Leading Dance for Early Years - Introduction to Leading Dance with Older People - Introduction to Dance for People with Parkinson’s.
  • A video outline
  • Other resources e.g. reflective journal guidance
  • Three online group discussion sessions
  • A one-to-one online discussion with a tutor prior to assessment.

  • Dance artists, dance teachers and folk dance practitioners seeking to develop skills to deliver sessions in participatory dance contexts
  • Community dance apprentices
  • Students in their second or third year of university or vocational dance training who wish to evidence skills, knowledge and understanding of how to deliver participatory dance sessions in community contexts
  • Post graduate dance students seeking to develop their community dance practice.
