Creating independence, making choices, taking control
Chris Stenton, General Manager, Foundation for Community Dance on professional development and you
Continuing professional development is a phrase used a great deal currently, though is neither new in the arts nor in other sectors of employment. Having a highly skilled, knowledgeable, flexible and more employable workforce has been central to government policy for many years as the key to a viable economic future for the nation.

CreativePeople, mentioned by a number of the contributors to this issue of Animated, is a national network of ten consortia dedicated to providing information, advice and guidance to support the professional development of people working in the arts and crafts industries.

Each consortium has a different focus. Some exist to support professionals within specific art-form areas nationally - for example literature and dance, others on the needs of all arts professionals within a given region - London and the South West, and others who are concerned with cross-artform needs - such as management, disability and cultural diversity.

The Foundation for Community Dance, Dance UK and Artist Development at The Place are the lead members of the CreativePeople dance consortium workindance.

Developed from a pilot initiative by the Arts Council of England, the network is established to look more coherently at continuing professional development across the arts and crafts, achieving a greater understanding of its importance. CreativePeople will provide some of the signposts and support to enable individual professionals to identify their own development needs and to choose appropriate strategies to get where they want, in order to do what they do better and with greater personal fulfilment.
