Dialogue between dancer and photographer is what it takes to make a dance photography course work. Hilary Shedel, director of this year's course at Saint Martin's College of Art & Design, explains: "As the tutor and a photographer I have to make the diverse elements successful. We were shooting three very different dancers using three different techniques, so the gelling process has to be repeated three times - and that times the number of students in each group! The dancers provided different opportunities for the photographers. In the darkroom the results of the students' intentions were translated into form. Despite the learning curve and the inevitable mistakes, the results were rewarding. Images were critiqued and displayed. After five days of intensive learning we were all relaxed in each other's company and I think this shows in the images."

Photographs taken during the course provide many of the images for the Autumn 2000 issue of animated as part of our ongoing support for emerging photographers.
