People Dancing Summer School 2018
Location: De Montfort University, Leicester
Timings:
This was the 10th People Dancing Summer School held at the Performing Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE) Building, De Montfort University, Leicester. There were 13 courses and you could apply for a day, for a series of courses or for the whole week, selecting the strands of greatest interest and potential value to your practice. There were also a range of free morning technique classes and one-to-one surgeries offering practice development advice.

Programme

  • Monday 23 July (afternoon only): Developing your somatic practice, led by Lauren Potter. Somatic practice helps us to tune in to our bodies and the world around us. It enables us to listen to and appreciate the connective pathways within our bodies that can enable us to move with ease and efficiency.
  • Tuesday 24 July: Using repertory as a resource in community dance practice, led by Debbi Purtill from balletLORENT. Repertory offers a multi-layered wealth of resources for community dancers to use as the basis for developing their practice. In this one-day course you will learn some Rep from balletLORENT'S current fairy tale production, Rumpelstiltskin for family audiences and Rep from La Nuit Intime and The Night Ball for grown up audiences.
  • Tuesday 24 July: Improving your teaching skills for community dance practice, led by Geraldine Hurl. This one-day course has been devised in response to practitioners' feedback and aims to refresh practitioners teaching skills in order to make teaching in any community context easier and more effective.
  • Tuesday 24 July: Dance and dementia, led by Diane Amans. This one-day workshop is aimed at dancers, activity leaders and other practitioners who want to develop their practice to include leading dance activities with people living with dementia.
  • Wednesday 25 July: Improving your teaching skills for community dance practice, led by Geraldine Hurl. This one-day course has been devised in response to practitioners' feedback and aims to refresh practitioners teaching skills in order to make teaching in any community context easier and more effective.
  • Wednesday 25 July: Introduction to dance with older people, led by Diane Amans. This is a one-day introductory course for dancers, activity leaders and other practitioners who want to gain skills, knowledge and experience in leading dance activities with older people.
  • Wednesday 25 July: Advanced dance for Parkinson's day, curated by English National Ballet and Dance for PD®. This one-day professional development lab is for dance artists who have at least one full year's experience teaching dance for people living with Parkinson's. During the lab, dance artists will experience and develop creative warm-up ideas, delve into English National Ballet's repertoire Voices of America featuring the work of choreographers Aszure Barton, William Forsythe and Jerome Robbins, and explore creative concepts around the use of repertoire and thematic approaches to creating dance with people living with Parkinson's.
  • Thursday 26 July: Teaching dance in primary schools, led by Claire Pring. This one-day course is aimed at community dance practitioners who are interested in developing their practice to teach within primary school settings, either as part of the general curriculum delivery, or in the provision of after-school activities.
  • Thursday 26 - Friday 27 July: Introduction to dance for Parkinson’s, led by David Leventhal and Danielle Teale. The Dance for Parkinson's Partnership UK with People Dancing and Dance for PD ® (USA) are pleased to deliver the Partnership’s annual training days. This is a two-day professional development opportunity for experienced dance practitioners, musicians and allied arts and health professionals interested in learning more about dance classes for people with Parkinson’s.
  • Thursday 26 July: Dance and dementia, led by Diane Amans. This one-day workshop is aimed at dancers, activity leaders and other practitioners who want to develop their practice to include leading dance activities with people living with dementia.
  • Friday 27 July: Developing youth dance practice, led by Jo Rhodes. If you're interested in delivering dance for young people (aged 11-25) in a variety of youth settings this one-day course is for you.
  • Friday 27 July: A Most Contagious Dance, led by artists from Shobana Jeyasingh Dance. A one-day workshop using Shobana Jeyasingh's choreographic process to approach health and wellbeing issues creatively.
  • Saturday 28 July: Introduction to teaching Performance-Parkour (2PK), led by The Urban Playground Team. This one-day course will introduce dance teachers to the values, principles and fundamental movement vocabulary of Performance-Parkour (2PK).
