The Risk Assessment for Participatory Arts Practitioners - Level 2 Award is a single unit qualification which requires you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the rationale and processes involved in planning, undertaking and enacting a risk assessment for participatory arts activities.

The qualification aims to introduce participatory artists to the concepts and processes involved in planning, undertaking and enacting a risk assessment for participatory arts activities. It will cover legal requirements, Duty of Care, identifying hazards, deciding who is at risk of harm, evaluation risks, deciding on precautionary measures, recording and implementing findings.

    Qualification summary

    The Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment for Participatory Arts Practitioners is a single unit qualification which requires you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the rationale and processes involved in planning, undertaking and enacting a risk assessment for participatory arts activities.

    Entry conditions

    There are no entry restrictions relating to this qualification.

    Prior knowledge or skills

    Candidates are expected to have some prior knowledge of one or more arts genres of their choice and experience of delivering or participating in arts activities taking place in participatory or community contexts.

    Qualification structure 

    This is a single unit qualification. Candidates successfully completing the assessment will be awarded the qualification.

    Progression routes

     This qualification can be taken as a stand-alone Award or candidates can progress to other higher level People Dancing Professional Qualifications that require a knowledge of risk assessment to support safer dance practice eg Level 4 Certificate Approaches to Dance with Older People.

    Qualification aim

    The qualification aims to introduce participatory artists to the concepts and processes involved in planning, undertaking and enacting a risk assessment for participatory arts activities.

    It will cover legal requirements, Duty of Care, identifying hazards, deciding who is at risk of harm, evaluation risks, deciding on precautionary measures, recording and implementing findings.

    Learning outcomes

    At the successful completion of this qualification you will be able to:

    • Understand the role that risk assessment plays as part of a broader health and safety policy
    • Understand arts practitioners’ responsibilities under the UK Health & Safety at Work Act (HSWA) (1974)
    • Understand the concept of Duty of Care
    • Identify how a risk assessment contributes to overall health and safety
    • Understand how to mitigate risk in relation to participatory arts activities with specified populations

    • Identify hazards relating to specific participatory arts contexts and practices
    • Understand the importance of signage and instruction.

    Topics that need to be covered (Indicative content)

    The following provides guidance about the areas that someone preparing to undertake assessment in this qualification will need to cover:
    • Duty of Care
    • UK Health & Safety at Work Act (HSWA) (1974)
    • UK health and safety regulatory and reporting authorities
    • Understanding relevant terms eg hazard, risk, harm, environment
    • Handling, storing and transporting
    • Environmental factors
    • Risk assessment in the context of wider health and safety measures
    • Risk factors with specified populations
    • Art form-specific hazards
    • Environmental contexts in which participatory arts may take place
    • Health and safety requirements for the self-employed, freelancers and employed staff.

    Time needed to prepare for assessment (Total qualification time)

    The total qualification time (TQT) for this Award is 16 hours. This might be broken down into 4 taught hours (guided learning hours) and 12 hours of self-directed study or a mix of the above. This includes the preparation and assessment time needed to complete this qualification.

    The time needed will depend on your level of experience. If you have been working in this field for some time and keep up to date with professional requirements related to this area of work you may need less time to prepare for assessment than someone who is new to the sector.

    Assessment method

    The assessment for this qualification is an online assessment which includes multiple choice questions, short answer questions and scenarios.

    Access to the online assessment will be provided when you register for the qualification.

    Example question:

    In the event of a serious accident (broken bones, loss of limbs, death etc), to which organisation should you report the accident?

    • Your professional body
    • UK Health and Safety Executive
    • NHS Direct
    • Falls Prevention Association.

    In order to pass the assessment you must gain a pass. The pass mark for the qualification is 60%.

    Attainment bands

    There are two attainment bands for the qualification: Fail or Pass. The pass mark for the qualification is 60%.

    Attainment level descriptors

    The following shows how the assessors use the marks in relation to the learning outcomes to determine your level of achievement:

    • Fail - 59% or under: You will demonstrate a limited knowledge and understanding of risk assessment in relation to participatory arts practice.
    • Pass - 60% and above: You will demonstrate a competent knowledge and understanding of risk assessment in relation to participatory arts practice.

    PLEASE READ THIS GUIDANCE DOCUMENT BEFORE ACCESSING THE ASSESSMENT

    This guidance has been devised to support candidates who wish to take the assessment for the People Dancing Professional Qualification Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment for Participatory Arts Practitioners.

    One time only

    You will only be able to access the assessment once so please ensure you are ready to take the test before selecting the ‘Assessment’ option on this web page.

    Time limit

    Once you open the assessment you will continue to have access to it for a maximum of 2 hours. This is considerably longer than you are likely to need.

    If you have not submitted your work at the end of the two-hour period the system will automatically submit the answers you have provided and you will not be able to open the assessment again.

    Answering questions

    Questions within the assessment are provided in a number of formats including multiple choice, true or false, drag and drop and short written answers.

    You should attempt all the questions in the assessment.

    You can change any of your answers prior to clicking on the ‘Submit’ button that appears at the end of the assessment.

    Review your answers before finishing your assessment.

    When you are ready to finish the assessment click the ‘Submit’ button. The system will ask you if you are sure that you want to submit the answers that you have given. If you are sure click the ‘Submit’ button again.

    Once the ‘Submit’ button has been selected a second time a message will appear on the screen confirming that your assessment has been submitted.

    You will not be able to revisit the questions or your answers once the Submit button has been clicked for the second time.

    Results

    The results of your assessment will be emailed to you within three weeks of submission.
